CMOs leave their jobs more often than CFOs and CTOs
About 22 of every 100 US CMOs left their role and company in 2024, against about 16 of every 100 CFOs and CTOs, according to Live Data Technologies data.
By Alex Hamilton, Insights · Published Oct 2026 · Data through 2025, with 2025 provisional

- CMOs left at a rate 29% to 44% higher than CFOs and CTOs in each year from 2022 to 2025.
- The gap goes back further: on average about 30% higher than CFOs and 35% higher than CTOs from 2019 to 2025.
How we counted
People holding a US-based chief marketing, chief financial or chief technology officer title, counted each year. An exit is a person leaving the role and the company, whether they retired, were let go or took a role elsewhere. Promotions and moves inside the same company are not counted, and the data does not show why someone left. Rates are exits per 100 people holding the title that year. Earlier years are not charted because Live Data's coverage was smaller then, and the gap between roles stays comparable across years. Counts are people Live Data tracks.
