How we counted
A head of customer success role here is a job record whose title is a head or vice president of customer success title ("Head of Customer Success", "VP of Customer Success" and similar). Interim, acting, fractional, deputy and advisory titles are left out, as are senior and executive vice presidents, directors, regional and area heads, and combined sales or marketing titles.
Each role is followed for two years from its start date. Left means the role has a recorded end date in that time. That includes a move to another title at the same company, and a title recorded again at the same company. In a sample of 99 ended head of customer success roles, 7 were the same title recorded again at the same company. Some roles never get an end date recorded. The two effects pull in opposite directions, so the shares are approximate.
Titles are matched as written. Some employers use vice president as a grade rather than a job, and a few of those titles may remain. Roles that started in 2019 were followed through 2020 and 2021, the pandemic years. The newest start years have had the least time for end dates to show up. Months are counted from the recorded start date; a start recorded only as a year counts from January.
Roles are worldwide, at companies with 50 or more staff today, including public-sector employers. About 45 in 100 of these roles with a known location were in the US.
The data covers people with a findable professional presence online. It is not a census of all workers.
Senior executive roles are compared on Executive tenure benchmarks. They are a different group of titles, so the two sets are not ranked together.
